Catherine N. Collins (91) was born May 24, 1920 and passed away in the early morning hours of March 24, 2012 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Clinton, New York. She attended Keuka College and graduated with a B.S. in Math and Physics in 1942. She obtained a MST from Portland State University in 1966. In October 1948 she married John Collins at Big Moose Community Chapel in Big Moose, N.Y.
In August of 1949 Catherine and her husband welcomed their first child, daughter Elizabeth (Betsi). After a brief time teaching in the small village of Klawock off the coast of Alaska and welcoming a second daughter Nora, Catherine and her husband moved to Portland, Oregon. In Portland they added to their family with two sons, Jim and Andy.
Catherine returned to teaching after her youngest went to school. She was a substitute teacher at Lincoln, Cleveland and Wilson high schools and taught G.E.D. classes at Portland Community College and Portland State University.
Catherine was an avid reader and gardener, caring for plants indoor and out. Until shortly before her death Catherine attended and actively participated in the life of Rose City Park Presbyterian Church. She was a longtime supporter of Heifer International, giving annually since 1985.
