Established in 2005 by Steven Toporoff in honor of his parents and grandparents.

Steven writes:

From the moment I first heard about Heifer, I knew that I would become a supporter. I feel blessed in my life and believe that it is critically important to pass along the many gifts I have received to make the world a better place. At the same time, I recognize that I am only one individual and there is just so much I can do to make the world more peaceful and just. I believe that Heifer’s approach is the answer—to help people, one at a time, one family at a time. More important, Heifer does not give people hand-outs, but a helping hand up, in a compassionate way that recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of all. Through pass-along gifts, Heifer’s work is multiplied countless times over. I am also impressed that in providing families with farm animals with which to earn a livelihood, Heifer has not forgotten to ensure that the animals will be treated properly, with medical care and rest.

My support of Heifer grew further after a trip to India where I unfortunately observed dire poverty first hand. After my trip, I resolved that, from that point on, I would encourage others to make donations to Heifer in my name, rather than accepting holiday or birthday gifts.

Finally, I decided to extend my giving to Heifer to ensure that gifts would continue well after my time on this earth concludes. To that end, I have established the Toporoff-Appel Endowment for Orphans Worldwide. It helps perhaps the most needy and vulnerable among us –orphans. Rather than focusing on any particular country, the endowment helps orphans wherever the need is most urgent.

This endowment is in honor of my parents and grandparents.
