THE TOUCH OF JESUS ENDOWMENT FOR ORPHANS

Established by John and Margaret (Peggie) Layman in 2002.

John writes:

"One day while looking through the Foundation's Country Endowment Catalog, our eyes and hearts were immediately drawn to Heifer's work with orphans both in sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe. Both Peggie and I were touched by the stories of Heifer's work with orphans around the world. So, we decided that we would establish an orphan endowment with winnings from a local contest at our bank. With the money from our recent good fortune, we wanted to be able to provide heifers for orphans for many years to come.

Why an endowment for orphans? My father was orphaned after his mother died during childbirth. His father was unable to care for him, so for several years he lived in an Episcopalian home for orphans. Later, when Peggie and I married, we adopted a son who was orphaned in early childhood after his single mother passed away. Life is difficult enough with two loving parents but what about children who have no one?"

Heifer's work with orphans is concentrated mostly in Africa, where AIDS has lefts hundreds of thousands of children without families, and in Central and Eastern Europe, where "social orphans" have been born of heartsick parents who feel forced, due to harsh economic conditions, to place their children in orphanages, hoping the children will receive better care than the parents can give. Heifer provides livestock, technical assistance and training. The overall objectives of these projects are making the orphanages self-reliant and improving the nutritional intake of the children. The projects also create an opportunity for the children to have the joy of caring for the animals, who otherwise have no chance for sharing their affection. Also, in some cases, older children get an opportunity to attend agriculture or animal husbandry training.
