YOUTH LEGACY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2003 with a gift from Warren and Alison Cohen of Brooklyn, New York. Alison is the Northeast Program Manager (North America) for Heifer International. She writes:
This endowment is a response to the violent murder of a member of Growing
Power's Youth Corps in Milwaukee. His name was Javon Duane
Tucker. Duane had been a member of the Youth Corps for about
four years. His death, allegedly attributed to gang activity,
is a tragedy. It is the fourth such violent death among
youth in Heifer projects that I am aware of since I started
this job seven years ago. Every single one of those deaths
involved minority youth, mostly male and mostly youth in
urban areas.
The depth of my sadness over this tragedy, and the others
before Duane's, is unfathomable. Heifer has an opportunity
and a responsibility (as well as a proven passion) to work
with youth and I hope this endowment will enable us to provide
more assistance to a greater number of youth.
