North America: God's Gang Endowments
Darious Moore has lived his whole life in the notorious Robert Taylor Homes in a small corner of the nearly 90 continuous acres of public housing that divide Chicago's south side. When Darious was just a small child he watched helplessly as his mother died in his arms from an asthma attack. Even with the support of family including a loving grandmother, Darious blamed himself for his mother's death. He stopped, withdrew inside himself, and spoke to others only when asked a direct question.
He got involved in the God's Gang youth outreach program and excelled. He quickly became the youth director for their Planting Dreams Worms and Fish Program, responsible for the care of the Heifer animals as well as the supervision and education of the younger project members. He took this responsibility to heart. During one summer of intense gang wars, most of the children in his building could not go outside, even to attend school. According to Carolyn Thomas, Executive Director of God's Gang, "Darious was there to relieve some of the pressure by gathering the kids and leading them down to feed the worms and fish. In the midst of all the shooting and attempts to end life, there was a teenager encouraging the cycle of life and helping our little ones to learn how to nurture it." The Chicago Urban League honored him for his community Service and mentoring with the worms and fish project. He has come a long way from the silent little boy who had never left home.
