EL SALVADOR COUNTRY ENDOWMENT
El Salvador is one of the smallest countries in Central America but one of the most populated countries in the region. After a 12-year period of civil war, which took about 75,000 lives, this country began the process of rebuilding during the 1990s. When the country seemed to be entering a more stable period in its history, a massive earthquake occurred in 2001, displacing thousands and killing hundreds.
Heifer is working to improve nutrition and increase income through the consumption and surplus sale of goat, turkey, rabbits and chicken products. Participants in these programs are receiving training in agricultural diversification, soil conservation and agroecology techniques to increase production and restore the environment. These projects of integrated sustainable agriculture will strengthen the rural economy and community health.
