BOLIVIA COUNTRY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2000 with a Gift from Mr. Eugene H. Brownell and the fundraising efforts of Richard and Susan Eyre of Woodstock, Illinois to benefit Heifer initiatives in Bolivia.
Bolivia is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country with a population surpassing 8 million. Traditionally, economic development within the country rests on the mining industry concentrated in the western altiplano and valleys.
Historically, the country has been plagued by hyperinflation, social and political unrest, as well as climatic disasters. Each of these factors contributed to a flow of people migrating towards the tropical areas of Bolivia, far surpassing the capacity of basic services, and contributing to a lack of employment. It has proved impossible for the country's government to meet the minimum conditions needed for the development of the migrating and native peoples.
Heifer Bolivia project recipients are made up of families of small agricultural producers. They are one of the largest sectors in Bolivia and supply one of the basic needs of its population: its food.
Heifer International has had a long and productive history in Bolivia since its inception on May 13, 1957 with the arrival of rabbits to the Bolivian Highlands, through The Methodist Evangelical Church.
Since that time, it is possible to witness the growth and gradual development of this project and its activities focusing on various defined stages. Heifer Bolivia projects include: dairy cows, llamas, alpacas, hair sheep and guinea pig projects, especially with agro-forestry farming practices as an important component.
