Latin America/Caribbean: Honduras Endowments
Nueve Frontera is a village in Honduras near the Guatemalan border. The village is extremely poor and had relied on a very small profit from the sale of coffee. Hurricane Mitch wiped out half of the coffee plantations with mudslides, severe winds and floods. After the storm, villagers had no form of income and were on the brink of starvation. One of the village leaders walked seven hours to reach a contact that had heard of Heifer International.
When Heifer arrived, the village was in a state of desperation. After the initial Heifer contact, the village went through a long period of training and deciding which family would benefit. Throughout this time, one man was convinced his smallest child was about to die of malnutrition. He dedicated every minute of his time to become a Heifer beneficiary and save his son. He knew the dedication and workload involved in the project was difficult, but as a young, determined father, he was now ready. When he explains his life now, there is a twinkle in his eye and confidence in a bright future. "The Heifer program has been beautiful. Life is no longer a threat to my little boy. Each of my three beautiful children has more energy, is stronger, and laughs longer. All eight bottles of milk our blessed cow gives us daily is consumed by our family. We have also learned how to make cheese through the project, providing more food for our children. We thank God every day at the table and to Heifer International for its training and generosity. We give thanks for the good things. We have been blessed."
Honduras is the third most impoverished country in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1998, the average annual household income was (US) $730, with social conditions placing Honduras lower than half of lower than half of Latin America. When Hurricane Mitch touched Honduras in October 1998; many families lost their farms, especially smaller animals such as chickens and pigs. They also suffered damage to some livestock projects involving cattle that had been implemented by Heifer International. The Honduran president declared that the hurricane had set the country back 20 years.
Contributing to or establishing your own Honduras endowment will ensure that you are helping to rebuild a country that has been ravaged by extreme poverty and natural disasters.
