Central Eastern Europe Endowments
NOEL AND VERA WELLS FAMILY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2001 with a gift from Vera C. Wells and the Wells Family Trust, of Cameron Park, California to benefit projects within the former U.S.S.R. borders.
What began with uprisings and the fall of the Iron Curtain in the Eastern Bloc in the late '80s ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early '90s. The people of Eastern Europe were left to contend with a legacy of communism and the Cold War. Countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe were ravaged by rampant poverty, inequality, and environmental catastrophe (including natural disasters, industrial pollution, the Chernobyl catastrophe, and devastated farmlands.) Ethnic tensions and civil war also plagued the area, and many countries had to redefine their boundaries and identities. Heifer International is working in the former U.S.S.R. countries to, among many things, rehabilitate small-scale dairy farms, to improve the quality of cattle breeds, and to train and assist farmers who are making the difficult adjustment from communal farming.
To join with the Wells and continue the myriad of effective, life-changing projects in the former U.S.S.R., give today.
