Albania Endowments
JACK H. COWEN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FOR ALBANIA
Established in 2002 with a gift from Merrill and Bette Clark of Hot Spring Village, Arkansas.
Shortly after the Berlin Wall crumbled and the doors to Central and Eastern Europe were flung open, Heifer International began helping farmers adjust to a world in which the familiar had become unfamiliar, the known unknown. With the collapse of communal farming, rural families were without jobs and lacked the training, equipment, credit, land and animals to start their own operations. The results, especially in the mountainous regions, were harsh conditions, extreme poverty and social problems. Many fled the rural areas for suburbs where they hoped to find jobs and a better life, but instead found limited opportunities. A unique phenomenon to this part of the world is "social orphans," as many heartsick parents feel forced to place their children in orphanages, hoping the children will receive food, care and education. For more than a decade, Heifer has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the hardworking farmers of Central and Eastern Europe as they slowly build a new way of life.
To help Albanians who are so willing to help themselves, please give today.
