THE TURTLE SISTERS ENDOWMENT
Established in 2004 with a gift from the Rita and Daniel Fraad Foundation, Inc of New York, New York to benefit the WiLD efforts in Indonesia.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelagic state, straddles the equator in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. One of its challenges is the unequal distribution of resources. (There are 6,000 inhabited islands!) Heifer is working here to promote a productive, sustainable mixed-crop agriculture, as well as providing training for animal health volunteers. There are dairy, fish and water buffalo programs and significant partnering with small indigenous non-governmental organizations.
Heifer began its WiLD (Women in Livestock Development Program) in 1990, providing women with the resources and skills they need to overcome hunger and poverty and achieve self-reliance. Did you know that women produce 80 percent of the developing world's food and bear most of the responsibility for their families' animals and crops, yet, they own less than one percent of the world's land? Women and children make up the majority of the millions of chronically undernourished citizens of our world. WiLD projects provide women with livestock and training, changing their lives and the lives of their daughters, granddaughters…
