CHINA: HOWARD E. SOLLENBERGER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
This endowment was established from a bequest of Howard E. Sollenberger’s in January 2005. Howard grew up in China where his parents were missionaries. He returned to do relief work in China both before and after World War II, where he worked along side Dan West, founder of Heifer Project International.
Despite having the second highest GDP in 2003 (behind the U.S.), on a per capita basis, China is still a poor country. Numerous issues plague different areas of the large country, for example, extreme flooding and typhoons in 1998, 1999 and 2002 lead to lost animals and thousands of acres of land. Environmental concerns are growing; it is estimated that one-fifth of the land used for agriculture has been lost since 1949 due to soil erosion and economic development. A myriad of Heifer projects in China are employing rabbits, goats, chickens, geese, ducks, cattle, fish and even silkworms. Many projects focus on Heifer's cross-initiative concerns like agro-ecology, sustainability and gender equity.
To ensure the valuable work of Heifer in China continues; please give today.
