AIDS Endowments

"All of us must recognize AIDS as our problem. All of us must make it our priority. Let us remember that every person who is infected is a fellow human being with human rights and human needs "
      - United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to only about 10% of world's population, but it now carries 70% of all AIDS sufferers worldwide -the majority being in the eastern, central and southern African countries, where the pandemic threatens the very survival of populations.

  • Adults in Africa are 10 times more likely to contract HIV than in North America, and 20 times greater than in Europe.
  • For every 10 women living with HIV, 8 are in Africa,
  • Of children born with HIV, 9 in every 10 are in this region

Realizing the devastating effects of AIDS on the people of Sub-Saharan Africa, and on Heifer's work in the region, Heifer International recently adopted an AIDS initiative in an effort to stop this pandemic. Heifer's work will focus on two main areas of work: education in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS; and improved nutrition for those who are living with HIV/AIDS. By providing information for safe-sex practices, as well as educating mothers on the dangers of passing on the disease to their children through breast milk, Heifer is joining individuals and organizations throughout the country to shine a light on the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Aids orphansSome of the root causes for the explosion of AIDS in Africa are ignorance, illiteracy, poor flow of information, low status of women, and most of all, poverty. These are all problems that Heifer works to solve everyday around the world.

Because of Heifer's presence and practices in Sub-Saharan Africa, most especially in the rural areas, the organization is poised to make a positive impact on the problem by incorporating AIDS education into our regular training. In addition, helping partners to ensure a diet strong in protein to strengthen the immune system is essential for the survival of those living with the disease.

The AIDS pandemic in Africa is an enormous problem in which Heifer is now helping to solve. When you try to imagine the size of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, imagine the difficulty in stopping it by educating one person at a time in remote villages that are only reached on foot. By establishing an AIDS Endowment, you could be providing a supporting hand in the struggle to end one of the most deadly and vicious diseases to plague the modern world.
