SOUTH AFRICA: MARION WILLIAMSON BLALOCK
Established October 6, 2004 by Paula Suggs and Cicely Ingram in honor of Marion Williamson Blalock. Marion served as the Director of the Minority Engineering Program at Purdue University from 1975 to 2003. This endowment was established to honor Marion’s life-long work and support of African American and Hispanic students at Purdue University. A letter from Paula and Cicely said Marion, “nurtured the character of future leaders and this dedication has enriched families, communities and major corporations throughout America.”
Despite the fact that South Africa is considered a predominantly middle-income country, daunting problems remain from the apartheid era, including high unemployment and areas of great poverty. The country, while rich in many natural resources, has its environmental challenges, especially the need for extensive water conservation and control measures. Also, a 2003 estimate suggests that 21.5 % of the adult population is infected with AIDS, a figure with its own daunting ramifications.
Heifer's work in South Africa includes almost 20 current projects using gifts of sheep, hens, goats, dairy cattle and more, all toward the same goal: creating self-reliant farmers, families and communities.
