RWANDA ENDOWMENT OF PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN AND YOUTH
Established in 2003 with the fundraising efforts of the women and youth of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Since Rwanda gained its independence from Belgium in 1962, the country has suffered from ethnic violence, especially during the 1990's. The 1994 genocide created as many as three million refugees. With the effects of genocide still evident, Heifer International is working in Rwanda to help facilitate the healing process and provide outlets for sharing, opportunities for a lasting peace and community harmony. According to the World Factbook, the country is slowly rebounding from food shortages sharply exacerbated by the civil strife and severe refugee problems of the early 1990s. Rwanda's economy has always been overwhelmingly agricultural, with most of the workforce engaged in subsistence farming. The country is the most densely populated country in Africa, and predominately rural. These facts combine to make it a prime project effort for Heifer. The benefits of the many cattle given there include improved nutrition and income, local employment and emerging gender equity through training and ownership.
