GHANA COUNTRY ENDOWMENT
Established in 2001 with the fundraising efforts of Richard and Susan Eyre, Heifer Foundation Trustees Emeriti, of Woodstock, Illinois.
Ghana's population exceeds 19 million people, with more than one-third of them living in poverty. Heifer Ghana is a newer program whose project work has gained a high profile, in part because of a successful vaccination campaign led by project partners that reduced mortality rates for poultry across the country. In addition to livestock, honeybees are key to many Ghana projects. Ghana imports sugar, which can be expensive, so honey provides a cheaper alternative for consumers. Heifer is training groups in modern honey harvesting. The honey is sold at nearby markets and the proceeds allow project participants to pay for school fees, medical expenses and more.
To date, all of Heifer's projects are located in southern regions of the country, but needs are equally high in the northern and western regions. Ghana has long suffered from high illiteracy, malnutrition, child mortality and the other attending effects of poverty. Heifer is working to change that, one family at a time.
