DR. ROBERT AND SARA CARNAHAN RWANDA AND/OR UGANDA MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
Established in 1999 with the bequest from the Charitable Remainder Trust of Robert and Sara Carnahan of Little Rock, Arkansas. A niece later wrote and said, "I am so grateful that the proceeds of this endowment will go there and that through this work the people of Rwanda will have hope and health. This is a wonderful legacy for my dear aunt and uncle who all their lives concerned themselves with meeting the needs of other people."
Since Rwanda gained its independence from Belgium in 1962, the country has suffered from ethnic violence, especially during the 1990's. The 1994 genocide created as many as three million refugees. With the effects of genocide still evident, Heifer International is working in Rwanda to help facilitate the healing process and provide outlets for sharing, opportunities for a lasting peace and community harmony. According to the World Factbook, the country is slowly rebounding from food shortages sharply exacerbated by the civil strife and severe refugee problems of the early 1990s. Rwanda's economy has always been overwhelmingly agricultural, with most of the workforce engaged in subsistence farming. The country is the most densely populated country in Africa, and predominately rural. These facts combine to make it a prime project effort for Heifer. The benefits of the many cattle given there include improved nutrition and income, local employment and emerging gender equity through training and ownership.
In Uganda, Heifer is providing livestock including dairy cattle, goats, poultry, pigs and bees. The focus of the projects is improving nutrition and income status for small-scale farmers, particularly women, as the male population has been so significantly diminished due to AIDS. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, and slow but steady growth has occurred in recent years.
