CONNECTICUT CHILDREN CARE ENDOWMENT FOR MOZAMBIQUE
Established in 2002 with the proceeds of a Read to Feed challenge from kids at The Hill & Plain Elementary School in New Milford, Connecticut. Five and six-year olds, with support and encouragement from their families and school, quickly raised several thousand dollars. One of their teachers had been on a church trip to this country and returned home determined to do something to help those she had met.
Current projects in Mozambique include introducing draft power to farmers; goat milk production and processing; and feeding and training orphans. There are women farmers' projects and a large goat re-stocking program in some of the country's "forgotten" districts that are hard to reach due to bad networks, roads and communications. As in all of Africa, one can see Heifer's commitment to agro-ecology, gender issues, education and so much more.
Where diets are not balanced and appropriate, Heifer is working to improve nutrition; where schools are beyond the reach of many children, Heifer is helping families earn extra income to pay for tuition and books; where erosion has rendered farmland all but useless, Heifer is providing trees and agricultural training to improve the soil.
