Long-time Heifer donor Beatrice (Bede) Buck, died peacefully on March 8, 2015 at her home in Winter Park, Florida. She was born in 1918 in Portland, Maine.
Following her passion for music, Bede graduated from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Upon graduation, she began a career devoted to her faith, playing organ and leading choirs in various houses of worship. When her parents retired to Lake Wales, Florida, Bede moved south too, continuing her church music ministry career in Alexandria, Louisiana. In 1963, she became the music director and organist at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Sanford, Florida.
After her retirement, she settled into The Winter Park Towers in Winter Park, Florida, as one of the earliest residents. Bede was a regular and witty contributor to the Tower Topics newsletter. She was also known to The Tower residents as the “cat lady” because she cared for the cat tribe that lives on The Tower’s grounds. Her simple life and generous heart resulted in giving most of her money to charitable causes. However, she still was able to travel the world widely, visiting Paris, London, Canada and Ireland.
