Heifer Ranch

A Hands-On Campus for Hunger Education

Heifer International's Heifer Ranch near Perryville, Arkansas, is a hands-on campus for education about world hunger and solutions through animal agriculture. Surrounded by Arkansas' beautiful Ouachita Mountains, the 1,100-acre facility provides more than 22,000 visitors a year with a variety of educational experiences - from two-hour tours to week-long work camps.

Through education that emphasizes experience, the Ranch's outdoor "living classrooms" acquaint visitors with Heifer's mission and the needs of those whom the organization serves. Visitors learn about the ways in which animals- and people- can make a difference.

On the Trail of Solutions

The Ranch's Global Village Trail familiarizes visitors with environmentally sound, sustainable methods for fighting hunger and poverty.

More than two-thirds of the world's people make their living from small-scale farming. The Global Village Trail includes an organic garden and demonstrations of small-scale farming with cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, bees and fish.

At the Guatemala Hillside Farm, visitors learn how two-and-a-half acres of steep, eroded hillside have been transformed into a diversified farm system that represents self-reliant small-farmer operations. Like its counterparts in other countries, the Guatemala Farm uses the limited resources available to impoverished families.

As visitors milk goats, make cheese, press bricks, or participate in other cottage industries, they learn more about the daily lives of struggling farmers.
