What We Do

Heifer Foundation was established by the board of Heifer International in 1990 to build an endowment to generate ongoing support for the work of Heifer International, to educate people on how planned charitable giving supports Heifer International's work and to serve as a fiduciary for our donors.

As of December 31, 2007, the Foundation's assets and commitments total over $90 million, with an endowment of $44 million; $26 million in trust and annuity funds; and gift commitments totaling more than $19 million.

How Heifer Foundation Helps You and Heifer International

We help donors reach their planned charitable giving goals while simultaneously funding endowments to assist Heifer International meet its mission of alleviating the global burden of hunger and poverty.

The Foundation educates people about a variety of planned charitable giving instruments, such as trusts, annuities and bequests. Through these instruments, we can help you provide for yourself, your loved ones, and the causes that matter most to you. We work closely with you and your trusted advisors to determine which instruments are best suited to your individual situation. Heifer Foundation then manages, with professional assistance, the funds entrusted to us, growing an endowment to support Heifer International's mission of helping needy people around the world become self-reliant. Each year a percentage of the Foundation's endowment is made available to Heifer International to support it's ongoing work around the world.

How Heifer Foundation Measures Stewardship

Because our donors entrust the Foundation with their funds, it is our goal to be exceptional stewards of those funds. For organizations such as Heifer Foundation, whose primary purpose is to provide for another entity(ies) through fundraising, the best method for measuring that stewardship is the ratio of total expenses to total assets. The range for excellent performance is considered to be in maintaining total expenses within three to five-percent of total assets managed on an annual basis. Heifer Foundation is currently at three-percent - From the Foundation's 2004 Annual Report

About Heifer International

Heifer International was founded on a simple belief: ending hunger begins with giving people the means to feed themselves. Today, 9.2 million families in more than 125 countries move toward self-reliance through the gifts of livestock and training in environmentally sound agriculture. Recipient families "pass on the gift" by sharing one or more of their animals' offspring with other struggling families. Each recipient becomes a donor. This process enhances self-esteem, ensures program continuity, builds solidarity and multiplies the benefits of the original gift for generations to come.
